Lalique and Steinway & Sons Create a Grand Piano that Truly Dazzles

After releasing the Heliconia piano last year (bedecked with heliconia flowers originally designed by René Lalique’s granddaughter in 1992) the French crystal maker has again partnered with renowned piano maker Steinway & Sons to create another masterpiece—this time, a black piano bejeweled with opaque black crystals.

The Masque de Femme piano is a bespoke Steinway Model B grand, often referred to as “the perfect piano” for its balanced and versatile performance in both intimate settings and midsize venues. The piano beautifully channels both art deco and art nouveau influences. Adorning the exterior are 1,043 elegant crystals set in an extremely meticulous process that took over two years to complete.
Lalique’s famous Coutard black crystals, shaped like water droplets, account for the majority of the jewels. Each crystal was cut, shaped, polished, and signed at Lalique’s Alsace factory before placed on the piano in Steinway & Sons’ Hamburg workshop. The Masque de Femme will tour the world before being auctioned. Concert and auction dates have yet to be revealed.
