Inis Meáin’s Sweaters Celebrate the Rugged Beauty of Ireland’s Islands

The Irish knitting company Inis Meáin (inismeain.ie), which takes its name from the Aran island on which it is based, honors the celebrated fisherman sweater with its meticulously crafted pullovers. For 40 years, the artisans at Inis Meáin have been reviving generations-old knitting patterns that reference the limestone isle’s rugged beauty—from the traditional diamond stitch that recalls the stone-walled fields to the cable stitch that mimics fishermen’s ropes—and now the brand is introducing new patterns, like Claíochaí, which evokes the ancient stone walls themselves. The sweaters (priced from about $375 to $825) are fashioned at the company’s workshop from such fine blends as wool and cashmere or baby alpaca and silk.
