Having trouble fitting passengers into your Ford Raptor? Well, perhaps you need the new F-150 Raptor SuperCrew. Unveiled this week at the Detroit Auto Show, the sport pickup adds rear doors to the existing Raptor design, along with more interior space for people and gear.The SuperCrew expands on the outgoing model's wheelbase by 12 inches (305 mm), while also adding another 6 inches (152 mm) in girth for better off-road stability. It also sits a little taller, thanks to longer-travel front and rear Fox Racing shocks.
Despite its extra length and width, it's actually 500 lb (227 kg) lighter than the existing Raptor. This is reportedly due to the use of advanced materials such as military-grade aluminum alloy. Combined with a new high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, a new 10-speed transmission, and an "instant torque" 4WD transfer case, this gives it a better power-to-weight ratio than its predecessor.
The exact output of its powerplant hasn't been stated, although Ford claims that it "produces more power with greater efficiency than the current 6.2-liter V8, which is rated at 411 horsepower and 434 lb. ft. of torque."
The truck additionally features a new Terrain Management System, which allows drivers to select between six preset modes that optimize driving dynamics for different types of terrain. These modes include Normal, for everyday driving; Street, for higher-performance on-road driving; Weather, for snow, rain or ice; Baja, for desert running, Rock, for low-speed rock-crawling; plus, a Mud and Sand mode.
Other new features include dual exhaust, 17-inch wheels with next-generation BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires designed for off-road performance, and a stronger frame thanks to the use of more high-strength steel.
