On August 14, a mod, 1960s-inspired sensation embarks on a new British invasion as the David Brown Automotive Speedback GT makes its first official appearance across the pond at the Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, in Carmel, Calif. Building from the chassis and power train of a Jaguar XKR, David Brown has coupled cutting-edge engineering with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Sixties for a timeless take on the grand tourer. Its gorgeous aluminum figure features a pillarless monocoque structure, 142 handcrafted body panels, and a finish that requires 120 hours of attention.

The interior is dressed in drum-dyed, full-grain leather and single-batch, hand-sanded wood veneer paneling. Beneath the striking profile lies a substantial amount of power delivered by a supercharged, 5-liter V-8 engine that can propel the car to a top speed of 155 mph with an acceleration time of zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. At the reins is a 6-speed automatic transmission. Each car requires approximately 3,200 man-hours to manufacture and can be further customized to order.

Ready for its close-up in this country, the Speedback GT was first glimpsed at the Quail Rally Welcome Reception on August 10 before its participation in the procession itself—an invitation-only, three-day drive around the Monterey Peninsula. On Friday, the 14th, the car will be lauded while on the lawn of Quail Lodge & Golf Club. Launched last year in the United Kingdom, the Speedback GT will be available to the U.S. market for a starting price of roughly $773,000.
