The EOS M10 is Canon’s new entry-level mirrorless camera

After finally giving its EOS M3 a wider release, Canon has now introduced a new entry-level mirrorless camera, the EOS M10. Designed to appeal to those looking to upgrade to an interchangable lens system, but who might be put off by too many buttons and dials, the M10 boasts an 18-megapixel APS-C sensor, a tilting 3-inch touchscreen, and built in Wi-Fi and NFC.

At the heart of the EOS M10 is an 18-megapixel APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm) CMOS sensor, which is the same size as those used in many of Canon’s DSLRs. Paired with a DIGIC 6 image processor, the new camera should be able to deliver high image quality in a variety of lighting conditions. Indeed, the M10 has an ISO range of 100 to 12,800 (expandable to 25,600) and can shoot at a respectable 4.6 fps.

Focus performance should be quick and accurate thanks to Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF II autofocus system, which is inherited from the firm's DSLRs. This 49 point autofocus system also boasts face detection and object tracking. On the video front, the new camera is capable of recording Full HD 1080p footage at 30/24 fps.

The styling of the EOS M10 is considerably more simple than that of the M3, with buttons being kept to a minimum. Measuring 108 x 67 x 35 mm (4.2 x 2.6 x 1.3 in), and weighing 301 g (10.6 oz) it is also smaller and lighter than the majority of mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensors. Around back there's a 3-inch touchscreen monitor which has 1.04 million pixels, and can be tilted 180 degrees for shooting in awkward positions, or when taking a selfie.

Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC allow easy sharing and remote control featuring live view with compatible iOS and Android devices. Again to appeal to what Canon is calling "the social media generation" the M10 has a Creative Assist mode which makes it easy to adjust settings and add effects such as background blur, vividness, contrast, warmth and filter effects. A Self Portrait mode also adjusts camera effects and settings to enhance skin smoothness and brightness.

While featuring a Canon EF-M mount, the M10 is also compatible with EF and EF-S lenses using an optional adapter.

The Canon EOS M10 will be available in black or white options from November, bundled with a EF-M 15-45-mm F3.5-F6.3 IS STM zoom lens, priced at US$600.
